Finding Your First Dance

*** This week we give you all of our tools for finding your own "perfect" First Dance ->

FINDING YOUR FIRST DANCE This is one of our favourite moments of the entire day. Outside of the ceremony, it is easily the most memorable part of the day, giving your guests a true glimpse of your love together on full courageous display. Because of the heightened emotions, it can also be understandably intimidating. Even for someone as outgoing as myself, I must admit that I found this moment big by any measure and was certainly self-conscious through pretty much every second of it. So why do we still encourage you to do a First Dance? Because it is beautiful. Because you are in love. Because you have a dance floor and a band and the perfect lighting and a room full of people who would love to cherish you for a few moments. The First Dance is a gorgeous gift you can give them in appreciating why they got dressed up and drove all the way to spend the evening with you. SHORTER IS BETTER THAN NOTHING This is such a beautiful moment that you will likely treasure when you are older. Even if you grimace at the idea, it is worth it 99% of the time for the brilliant photo you will have that lasts forever, even when you are both so old that your knees give out at the thought of dancing together. Your First Dance does not have to last a full 4 minutes and 3 choruses! Even just a single minute of dancing to the end of your song's first chorus is enough for your expert photographer to capture the moment and generate a gracious round of applause from your guests. To make sure that fading the moment is not silent or awkward, just as the song is fading out, have the MC introduce you once again as husband and wife" Ladies and Gentleman, one more big round of applause for our bride and groom". You may then blush and exit the dance floor as the triumphant hero you truly are. WHAT SONG SHOULD YOU CHOOSE? Search for the "perfect" first dance can be quite the challenge! It seems simple enough at first until you start trying to think of a specific song. Your mind goes blank & your heart starts to race. Every song you think of seems dull, overplayed or just plain wrong. Suddenly choosing your perfect first dance, a task which previously meant nothing to you, now hinges upon it the success of your entire reception. You ask yourself:"How on earth could this be so hard? I am usually such a creative, dynamic and interesting person. Where is the perfect first dance song hiding in our hour of need!?" Don't panic! The vaulted expectations of such a big moment are known to induce tunnel vision, even in a creative, dynamic and interesting person like you. This is such a common source of stress, we thought we would share a few of our favourite first dance songs with you in the hopes that they might inspire yours too. In performing so many incredible first dances over the years, we have been lucky to come across some true gems. Before we get to the list we have a few universal rules to help guide your way: BRENT & SARAH'S SEARCH FOR THE "PERFECT" FIRST DANCE Sometimes hearing someone else's story can be helpful, especially in the case of Sarah and myself as our search for the "perfect" First Dance was equally painful. We had our ceremony songs selected, the hilarious room-entrance choices for our family and friends all lined up, the song-list through cocktails, dinner and dance was complete. The ever pressing-question of Parent Dances had even been answered in style with two heart-filling selections. Why oh why could we not decide on a First Dance to save our beautiful young lives? The answer lie once again in the search for a "perfect song" as we reluctantly learn in life, there are sadly no purely perfect things among us. While we had toyed with "perfect" songs and had written in and scribbled out as many choices as there are songs in Ed Sheeran's shiny catalogue, we hadn't found anything that totally summed up our experience. It was with only 3 days to go, on the Wednesday morning we were packing up our bags to travel to the rustic beach-side resort 2.5 hours outside of TO where we go married, that we finally landed on a First Dance that matched our moment well enough to inspire tears and cheers! For us, we went down memory lane and chose a DIRE STRAITS song that evoked our emotions for entirely different reasons. My reason was of course sillier as I remembered loving it from a couple of late 90s Teen Movies in EMPIRE RECORDS and CAN'T HARDLY WAIT (I still highly recommend.) Sarah liked the song separately as Mark Knofler's voice reminds her a lot of me singing (which was like the greatest compliment for me at the time!) The song is ROMEO AND JULIET, a story about star-crossed kids who fall in love in an epic story explained by a wise old man. Pretty Great. SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? While this is obviously not a perfect choice for everybody, it was the perfect choice for US! There is no way for me to truly duplicate this advice for you, which is why I shared the story. In short, you have to dig in and think of the music that means something to you both. Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind: 1) Dig into those old CDs and playlists from days gone by. 2) Take a look specifically at songs released the year you two met. 3) Lyrics are nice, but they will seldom be "perfect". The emotion of the songs matters most. 4) Don't worry if your song choice is obvious. 5) If the tempo isn't quite right, remember that your band can slow it down for you. 6) Sometimes the perfect song to you is super loud hard or fast. We say go for it! 7) Ultimately the only thing that matters is that the song means something to you both :) Without further delay, it is time for us to list some of our favourites we have had the proud pleasure of performing over the years. We have arranged them for you once again by genres we have found to be similar.
