Finding Your First Dance

January 15, 2020

Finding the perfect first dance can be quite the challenge!  It seems simple enough at first until you start trying to think of a specific song. Your mind goes blank & your heart starts to race. Every song think of seems dull, overplayed or just plain wrong. Suddenly choosing your perfect first dance, a task which previously meant nothing at all to you, now hinges upon it the success of your entire reception.

You ask yourself:"How on earth could this be so hard? I am usually such a creative, dynamic and interesting person. Where is the perfect first dance song hiding in our hour of need!?"

Don't panic!  The vaulted expectations of such a big moment are known to induce tunnel vision, even in a creative, dynamic and interesting person like you.

Because this is such a common source of stress, we thought we would share a few of our favourite first dance songs with you in the hopes that they might inspire yours too.  In performing so many incredible first dances over the years, we have been lucky to come across some true gems.  Before we get to the list we have a few universal rules to help guide your way:

1) DON'T STEAL YOUR BEST FRIEND'S SONG - Unless of course they stole your venue. In which case this is absolutely fair game.

2) SEARCH FOR INSPIRATION ALL AROUND YOU - Movies, commercials & TV shows are just the tip of the iceberg.  Go through your old mix tapes and CD collections to find what you and your partner might have in common.

3) DON'T WORRY IF YOUR SONG IS OBVIOUS -  Classic songs are classics for a reason! Timeless treasures like "Can't Help Falling In Love" are at the top because of their perfection. If the song moves you, be bold and choose it anyway.

4) IF YOU HIRED A BAND YOU CAN DO ANYTHING - Musicians can take almost any song and slow it down into your perfect slow dance. Our music video recording of Daydream Believer is a nice example of how to take a mid-tempo classic and turn it into romantic bliss

5) WE ARE HERE TO HELP! Never fear, if you are still stuck after reading this, email us with the song that you find to be your closest favourite and we will send you back a few more helpful suggestions not listed here. Good luck on your search!
