Cake-Cutting Classics

April 23, 2019

If ever there was a moment at your wedding to take a little less seriously, this is it!  Cutting the Cake will likely land on your wedding itineray  one way or the other (after all, you spent all that money on the cake, you really should take a photo with it!)

The ritual of "Cutting the Cake" while a bit random at a glance, gets even stranger when you take a look at its traditional origins.  There are a range of stories ranging from "breaking bread-loafs over the bride's head" in Ancient Rome, to cakes being stacked "as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over" in Medieval England, none of them making much more sense than the seemingly-made-up explanations offered on modern wedding blogs.

Given that there is no obviously logical reason for cutting the wedding cake, it is best to assume we still do it because it seems fun and somewhat meaningful.  What better opportunity to have fun by adding a song that is meaningful to you!

The added bonus of choosing a song you love for cake cutting is that it will take some of the attention and pressure off of you, meaning that you won't feel compelled to end your cake cutting with a performance-anxiety-induced cake smash.

Don't smash the cake!  I have a theory that no bride has ever truly wanted to be part of a cake smash, rather it is by virtue of the cake cutting ritual being so awkward that they feel compelled to do something to normalize the situation (then consequently spending the next 20 minutes cursing the cake while re-doing her make-up!)

Don't let this happen to you! This week's blog is devoted to helping you find music that will make your cake cutting both memorable and enjoyable for the 2 minutes of attention that it demands.

We have broken the songs into different categories alongside strategies to avoid the ill-advised cake-smash (for anyone that is still planning a cake-smash, feel free to replace any/all of our brilliant ideas with the words "cake smash".)

All of these songs are so beloved that you can easily end your cake cutting with a toast to your guests. Taste the cake, put down the plate, then theatrically raise your glasses of champagne and let the crowd roar in delight.

This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) - Natalie Cole
That's Amore - Dean Martin
Cheek to Cheek - Ella Fitzgerald
When I'm 64 - The Beatles
Love & Marriage - Frank Sinatra
Build Me Up Buttercup - The Foundations
Lean On Me - Bill Withers
L.O.V.E. - Nat King Cole
You Are The Best Thing - Ray LaMontagne
Everything - Michael Buble
A Kiss To Build A Dream On - Louis Armstrong
The Way You Look Tonight - Frank Sinatra
All you Need Is Love - The Beatles

For those who would like to take this opportunity to slow things down and enjoy the romance of the evening, any of these songs will brilliantly light the mood.  A wonderful way to finish the cake cutting is to put down your plates and come together for a twirl and dip (or twirl and embrace if you are nervous about the dip.)

Can't Help Falling In Love - Elvis Presley
Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Israwl Kamakawiwoʻole
Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Just One Look - Doris Troy
Halo - Beyonce
Lucky - Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat
And I Love Her - The Beatles
Marry Me - Train
Just The Way You Are - Billy Joel
The Way I Am - Ingrid Michaelson
Perfect - Ed Sheeran
At Last - Etta James
The Way You Look Tonight - Tony Bennett
Home - Michael Buble

For those about to rock the cake-cutting, we salute you.  Dinner can get long and cake-cutting can certainly be boring, why not take it to the next level?  A high energy cake cutting can be memorable, just make sure to be careful with the knife! Ending the cake cutting with some rock flare, take your hubby by the hand and run through the crowd high-fiving them like the rock-stars you are!)

Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard
Cake By The Ocean - DNCE
Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
Cuts Like A Knife - Bryan Adams
Best Day Of My Life - American Authors
Ho Hey - Lumineers
Sugar - Maroon 5
Good Life - OneRepublic
You're My Best Friend - Queen
Big Bottom- Spinal Tap
Let's Go Crazy - Prince
Adventure Of A Lifetime - Coldplay
Sweet Child Of Mine - Guns N Roses

These are especially effective for cake cuttings that involve something ceremonial like a sword. Take it all the way over the top with music that creates the overture you are imagining.  At the end of the cake cutting hold your hands high and relish in your almighty triumph (again, being super careful with that sword you may or may not be holding!)

Game Of Thrones - Theme
Star Wars - Theme
Star Wars - Imperial March
Indiana Jones - Theme
Rocky - Theme
Rocky - Eye Of The Tiger
Jaws - Theme
Soul Bossa Nova - Quincy Jones
Shaft - Theme
Back To The Future - Theme

Some people love literal jokes and for them there are more than enough songs with "cake" and "sugar" in them to cause a bellyache.  Our favourite to end these theatrically-cheesy numbers is to go ahead and take a bow. You deserve it.

Sugar Sugar - The Archies
Sweetest Thing - US
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You - James Taylor
Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch) - The Four Tops
Cut The Cake - Average White Band
Love You Madly - Cake
Lollipop - The Chordettes
Candyman - Christina Aguilera
Chapel Of Love - Dixie Cups
The Sweet Escape - Gwen Stefani
Recipe For Love - Harry Connick Jr.
Wishing & Hoping - Ani Difranco
Ice Cream - Sarah McLachlan
Eat It - Weird Al
