2000s Acoustic-Tunes

September 17, 2019

This week we put our focus on 2000s Acoustic Lovesongs, those brilliant little tunes from 2000-2009 beginning with John Mayer and ending with Jason Mraz.

For many of you reading this, they were the songs playing in the background when you were young and falling in love for the first time. Perhaps you were even moved to pick up an acoustic guitar and learn a few lines to impress that special someone (yes, those private serenades were usually un-intentionally super-awkward, but the intention was lovely nevertheless.)

The songs are all great ideas for your CEREMONY,  FIRST DANCE or SLOW DANCES anytime through the evening. With their heartfelt lyrics and thoughtful well-crafted melodies, they are all perfect to use in either their original format or adapted by almost any band configuration.

The 00s decade often does not get the credit it deserves (blame it on its less-than-catchy name.) In looking back, this time period represented a true renaissance of rootsy singer-songwriters who were a were part of a seriously inspiring new grass-roots music movement.  Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Michael Franti, Ani Difranco, Bright Eyes...there is a nice mellow thread that connects these artists (Jack Johnson insisted that the threads be fair-trade only.) When you think of this decade's new-found interest in coffee-houses, well-being, mindfulness & organic-everything, it is no wonder than this genre of music was so darned popular the entire way.

AND these songs keep getting requested!  Whenever they do, we are often asked for suggestions for other songs that are similar to perform with them. This week we list and celebrate all of the favourites we have come across through previous awesome performances and memories. We think there is a good chance you will love them too.

We have listed 3 sub-genres below with a definition of what links these songs as well as a recording to help you imagine what these might sound like on your special day.  Pour yourself a non-fat fair-trade cappuccino, take off your shoes and light some incense, we are about to get rootsy!

AWESTRUCK ACOUSTICS
These are the songs that were largely written by singer songwriters with sparing musical production, often recorded with just a singer and their acoustic guitar. Best enjoyed alone on a quiet afternoon while writing in your dreams journal.

SOFT ROCKERS
A touch more life-like than their acoustic cousins, these songs about life and love had a band backing their heart-drenched lyrics, adding a unique powerful feeling to each one. Many of these were on your road-trip mixes of the past with you graciously singing along (while stealthfully sing/mumbling the less-memorable parts.)
