Dance The Night Away

*** All of our tips and tricks for creating an epic dance party ->

As the legendary James Brown once famously said, "The one thing that can solve most of our problems is dancing". There is a magic that happens when your reception opens up the dance floor and everyone celebrates together in full brilliant human expression. The magic ingredient, so to speak, is in choosing the songs that will get everyone excited! For every year that passes, that formula continues to get slightly more complicated as there is more and more brilliant music to choose from every single day. What you and your guests will find incredibly will be unique to your age, culture, location and general disposition, meaning that no two reception dances should ever be exactly the same Great Dances Happen in Real Time Being flexible is the greatest ability that any fantastic Band of DJ can ever have. The art of putting together a great playlist is in responding to whatever is working best. That means that while you can have an idea of what will work ahead of time, you can never truly know until you see how the dance floor is responding to it. While an epic song like Don't Stop Believing works amazingly a good percentage of the time, there are indeed some occasions where it does not work at all. The success of the party then hinges upon cutting that song short and changing to something different quickly. The song that comes next should likely be a "safe" choice, perhaps a slow ballad dedication that brings out a specific couple on the dance floor. Perhaps a R&B throwback hit that the bridesmaids all sang back-in-the-day together. Or perhaps just another "good-chance-guess" of a different variety like Uptown Funk. Whatever those might be, it is useful to find a list of 5-10 of these ahead of time to make sure your dance floor never misses a beat. Song Requests are Key! Think of your dance reception as another way of telling your story. You grew up with music all around you, from songs your family played while you were a kid to the songs blasting in your headphones through adolescence. Most important of all were perhaps the songs playing in your car in those years you first met your sweetheart, through the lovely winter dinner dates and glorious summer road-trips. Choosing a list of songs that mean the most to you and your family is the surest way to stack the deck in your favour. While a random mix of music can always work, hearing songs you and your guests absolutely adore is absolute magic in the heightened energy of your dance party. While you don't have to choose every single song, even a list of 5-10 songs can help direct the music energy in a way that will love and in so doing will create a dance reception that will feel uniquely and memorably yours. SO What Songs Work Best? In performing at hundreds of weddings and events over the years, we have developed a good sense of what songs should work a good percentage of the time. While every party is different and every group of people unique in what they respond to, we have compiled a list of our favourite songs below that have been incredible on countless dance floors before. We have done our best in keeping the list interesting and avoided "groan-worthy" songs as much as possible. The below selections are all obvious and useful, while at the same time hopefully not so obvious that they are considered cheesy (such as the infamous Chicken Dance.) The below selections should carry with them enough cache to give your party's playlist the coolness and credibility it rightly deserves.

TOP 40 HITS One of the surest ways to get everyone on the dance floor is with songs they know all the lyrics to. These are the songs that the masses sing on the way to work in the mornings, so starting your party with any of these puts all of those hours of singing alone in your car to use as you belt it out at the top of your lungs.
